Description:
UBS is the world’s second largest bank, with assets of nearly $2 trillion. Genesis IONA is engaged a in a number of mission critical projects at UBS as part of a major, multi-year transition of UBS’ computing architecture to distributed component computing.

The most recent success has been in the area of data migration facilities using the Common Warehouse Model (CWM™) standard from the Object Management Group (OMG™). As part of the transition, UBS required a mechanism to migrate their existing legacy data and code into the new component-based environment. In order to control the migration, an appropriate repository and standardized means of modeling transformations between physical and logical data structures was essential. OMG's CWM seemed to fit the bill.

Using the CWM standard in this important project, UBS and Genesis IONA were able to not only rapidly construct a prototype repository, but also validate the standard. During the validation process it was found that explicit extensions to the standards were required by UBS. These extensions have now been formally incorporated into CWM as the ‘COBOL Data Division’ and ‘Entity Relationship’ extensions. This is important proof that a CWM-based repository can successfully be used to hold information necessary to support data migration. The CWM extensions proved successful and have now been formally adopted by UBS.
